Queensland Towing Regulations

1. Weight Limits

  • The towing vehicle must be capable of safely towing the trailer, adhering to the manufacturer's specifications for Gross Combination Mass (GCM) and Gross Trailer Mass (GTM).
  • The trailer's weight, including the load, must not exceed the towing capacity of the vehicle.

2. Safety Equipment

  • Towing Mirrors: Required if the trailer obscures the standard rear view.
  • Safety Chains: Mandatory for all trailers. One chain for trailers with a GTM up to 2,500 kg, and two chains for trailers between 2,501 kg and 3,500 kg.
  • Brake Systems: Necessary for trailers with a GTM over 750 kg. Brakes on at least one axle for trailers between 751 kg and 2,000 kg, and brakes on all wheels for trailers with a GTM over 2,000 kg.

3. Speed Limits

  • Drive at a safe and appropriate speed, considering road conditions and vehicle handling capabilities. No specific speed limit for towing in Queensland.

4. Other Requirements

  • Load Restraint: Loads must be properly secured.
  • Lighting and Indicators: Trailers must have functioning brake lights and indicators.
  • Number Plates: Trailers must display a clearly visible number plate.
  • Registration: Trailers must be registered and meet roadworthiness standards.

5. Special Considerations

  • Oversize trailers may require special permits.
  • Learner drivers are generally allowed to tow trailers, subject to conditions and supervision.
