Trailer Exterior

  • Tires: Check for proper inflation, tread wear, and any visible damage.
  • Wheels: Inspect for cracks, bends, or broken spokes, and ensure lug nuts are tightened.
  • Lights and Reflectors: Verify that all lights (brake lights, turn signals, tail lights) and reflectors are functioning and clean.
  • License Plate: Ensure it is securely fastened and visible.
  • Coupler and Hitch: Inspect for wear, proper fit, and secure attachment.
  • Safety Chains: Confirm that safety chains are undamaged and properly connected.
  • Brakes: Check the trailer brakes for proper operation.

Trailer Interior (If Applicable)

  • Doors and Latches: Ensure doors close securely and latches function properly.
  • Interior Lights: If equipped, check that they are operational.
  • Load Security: Verify that cargo is properly secured and balanced.
  • Flooring: Inspect for any damage or weakness that might compromise safety.

Connection to Tow Vehicle

  • Hitch Connection: Double-check the hitch connection for security and correct attachment.
  • Electrical Connection: Ensure all connectors are properly attached and wiring is in good condition.
  • Brake Controller: Test the brake controller for responsiveness and proper operation.
  • Mirrors: Adjust mirrors for adequate visibility around the trailer.

Final Checks

  • Route Planning: Confirm the route to ensure it's suitable for the trailer's size and weight.
  • Weather and Road Conditions: Review current and forecasted conditions.
  • Emergency Equipment: Check for the presence of a spare tire, jack, wheel chocks, and a basic tool kit.

Additional Notes

This checklist should be completed before each trip. Any issues discovered during the inspection should be addressed before departure. Regular maintenance checks are recommended in addition to this pre-trip inspection.
