How pick-up works
Book online
Pick your site, your trailer and your times. First booking? There is a one-time ID check with your driver licence. It takes about 60 seconds.
Tap Pickup trailer
Within 30 minutes of your hire start, open your booking page from the confirmation text or email. Answer a few quick questions and you get your trailer number and key box PIN.
Hook up and go
No counter, no queue, any hour. Bring it back to the same site any time before your hire ends.

Matt started Empire in 2021 with a single trailer in his front yard in West Mackay. It is now 34 self-service sites across Queensland, and it is still owned and run from Mackay.

Is Empire Trailer Hire part of U-Haul?
No. Empire Trailer Hire is an independent, Queensland-owned business. We are not connected to U-Haul and we can’t help with a U-Haul booking. If you already have one, contact them directly.
Where can I hire a trailer?
We have 34 self-service sites in regional Queensland: Mackay (12), Townsville (5), Whitsundays (4), Bowen (2), Gladstone (2), Rockhampton (2), Toowoomba (2), Ayr, Biloela, Calliope, Emerald and Moranbah. Use the finder near the top of this page to see the closest one to you.
How much does it cost?
Small box trailers start from $5 for the first hour, with no minimum hire. Large tandems start from $48 per 6 hours, furniture trailers from $72 per 3 hours and car trailers from $87 per 3 hours. Each site’s page shows the live price for the times you choose.
Can I pick up at night or on a Sunday?
Yes. Every site is self-service and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pick up and return whenever suits you.
Can I do a one-way hire?
Not as a standard booking. Trailers go back to the site you picked them up from. There is no kilometre limit, so you can take one as far as you need and bring it back. When we need a trailer moved between two of our own sites, we offer that trip as a free one-way hire. See the one-way page.
What do I need to bring?
Your physical driver licence, a vehicle rated to tow the trailer and its load, and your own tie-down straps. Our trailers use a 7-pin flat plug and come with an adaptor to 7-pin small round.
What if my plans change?
Change your dates or times for free on your booking page. If you need to cancel, do it any time before your hire starts and you get a full refund.
Do I need an electric brake controller?
No. Trailers with electric brakes use the Elecbrakes system, which you control from a free phone app. Download it before you pick up.
